I have been participating in triathlons for about 4 years now and consistently training for about 2 years. Like most of us, I did my first few triathlons to support the various charitable causes of each race and mainly as a member of a relay team. After completing my first full triathlon, I was very humbled at how difficult it was to complete a multi-sport race. While I had always considered myself to be fit, it was quite apparent that my idea of fitness was lacking a few slow twitch fibers. To say the least, I was very disappointed with the result of my race but not discouraged. Extremely motivated to perform better, I joined master’s swimming and the local triathlon club here in Rolesville in 2015. I learned a lot from the coaches there, Robert VanGraafeiland and John Austin. And I will always be grateful to them for sharing their time and knowledge about the sport with me. This year I completed two Half Ironmans as well as achieved personal bests at 8 other races at varying distances. And on November 19th, I will be participating in my first Masters swim meet at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. I am looking forward to the upcoming year for multiple reasons. One is because I will be working with Marty Gaal from On Step Beyond. As well as being an accomplished triathlete, Marty has a great reputation as a coach and I am sure he can help me reach all my goals for 2018. Secondly, I have been asked to start a pre-masters/masters swim class at the gym where I train. This class will be geared toward adults wanting to improve their swimming technique as well as for triathletes looking to improve their swim times in the pool. And lastly, a children’s triathlon club is also being started at my gym and I will most definitely be donating my time and energy to it. I really enjoy helping others just getting into the sport. And one day, when I can no longer even do the aqua-bikes, I would certainly love the opportunity to help someone achieve their goals in this sport.
